City of Norfolk Flood Risk Microsite

Norfolk Flood Risk Center

Designed the Norfolk Flood Risk Center microsite for the City of Norfolk, VA. This site allows local residents to enter their home/rental address and learn what flood zone they are located in while suggesting types of flood insurance they can purchase. I designed this microsite by closely following the WCAG Accessibility standards and facilitating user testing to improve the design and user functionality.

User Test Overview

Summary
Users found the Microsite easy to use and designed better than other city sites. However, many felt that the language used on the site could be clearer. In particular, users found the language for the “Baseline Knowledge” and “Flood Zone” sections confusing, especially if they had never applied for flood insurance before.

Suggestions
Users suggest to change the language for the “Baseline Knowledge” and “Flood Zone” sections so that users can understand the importance of these sections. Further explain what the letter grade and number mean for the flood zones.

Solution
The “Baseline Knowledge” section has been changed to “Set Ground Level” along with the language. Users now have a clear understanding at what level a flood can harm their home. The language for the “Flood Zone” section has also changed. Users now have a clear understanding of what flood zone grades are for their specific flood zone.
